Coleg Sir Gar

Coleg Sir Gar is a college of Further and Higher Education based in Carmarthenshire in South West Wales and is part of University of Wales, Trinity Saint David Group structure. The college has five campuses at Llanelli (Graig Campus); Ammanford; Llandeilo (Gelli Aur Campus); Carmarthen (Pibwrlwyd and Jobswell Campuses).

Land-Based Studies 

The first training course in Agriculture was delivered at Gelli Aur in 1952. In 2003 the College celebrated 50 years of agricultural provision at the Gelli Aur Mansion. In August 2003 the College relocated from the Mansion House to a new purpose built teaching and learning centre based on the college farm. 

Coleg Sir Gâr is one of the learning further education providers of Land based programmes in the UK. Courses are delivered in an enthusiastic and energetic learning environment, underpinned with specialist resources including a farm that demonstrates best practice and is a leading knowledge transfer resource to the Welsh agricultural sector. There are also new equine and animal facilities in Pibwrlwyd. Staff are highly experienced and qualified and are proactive in sharing this knowledge with their students in a highly supportive manner which ensures that all learners achieve their full potential. 

Agricultural, forestry, countryside management and land-based engineering programmes are predominantly based at the college’s Gelli Aur campus which is a purpose built farm campus near Llandeilo. Whilst animal science, equine studies courses are delivered at Pibwrlwyd in Carmarthen in a specialist equine and animal care section which houses an aviary, exotic animal care facilities incorporating reptiles, fish and amphibians.

Land based courses are offered from Level One to level Six ( Degree) in most subjects Opportunities exist for school leavers, adult and employers who wish to train for a vocation or to update their professional skills. Apprenticeships are also available through the college with local employers providing the opportunity to learn and earn at the same time. 
All programmes are designed to ensure learners develop industry relevant skills and as a result normally involve the teaching of practical skills and underpinning technical knowledge. Learners will regularly visit leading practitioners and events throughout their programmes to underpin their studies and help contextualise their learning. 

Links with the National Botanic Garden of Wales and Aberglasney Gardens means that horticultural students benefit from working with industry leaders and similarly, countryside and Environmental management learners work throughout the county and beyond, gaining experience with major organisations in their field. Students will undertake extended periods of work placement both locally and across the UK.

Students develop their skills to industry standard under the supervision of staff who have industry experience in the various land based sectors and as a result students regularly win awards from leading employer and industry led organisations. Progression to employment or to higher education is extremely effective.

There are high levels of progression from all learners. Those who achieve a level three qualification at further education are able to progress to higher education.
